SWINDON Silicon Systems
SWINDON Silicon Systems is a global leader in the design, test and supply of complex custom mixed signal ASICs, sensor interfaces and MEMS pressure sensor solutions for both Automotive and Industrial applications.
The SWINDON team today
Today SWINDON Silicon Systems is owned by Sensata Technologies, the global automotive and industrial system component supplier.
The company operates from its UK headquarters in Royal Wootton Bassett, near Swindon Wiltshire, where all our design, layout, evaluation, wafer probe and device production test and global logistics are located. We provide a unique full turnkey (FTK) offering for mixed signal ASICs and our team provides you with the full spectrum of ASIC services, all conducted in house, resulting in higher performance, smaller size and lower costs.
Our design engineering team consists of PhD, MSc and degree qualified design engineers with an average relevant experience of greater than 15 years in the design of complex analog, digital and mixed signal ASICs.
SWINDON has extensive in house expertise that is required to fulfil our FTK service offering. These departments include design and test engineering, product engineering, quality assurance, failure analysis, finance and legal, purchasing, production, human resources and sales and marketing. All of these skill sets are combined to offer all our customers an unparalleled level of service and customer satisfaction.
SWINDON’s Production Test Facilities
At SWINDON the production test of the ASIC is a key component of what we do and is an important element in the process of providing high quality product that is both reliable and free of defects. It is so important and critical to the quality of what we produce that we conduct all wafer probe and ATE in-house at our SWINDON facility.

SWINDON’s partnership approach to ASIC design and development
The SWINDON partnership approach provides a complete integrated service from design concept through to production supply for analogue and mixed mode ASICs and integrated MEMS solutions.
The design team’s expertise is broad-based with an international reputation as specialist within the Mixed Mode, ultra low power and high-speed design areas.
Using the “fabless” business model, approved partner companies are used to fabricate the silicon and package the devices. By utilising a wide variety of partner foundries, the most advanced semiconductor processes can be selected for optimised performance while maintaining the commercial advantage.
Origins and growth
The company was formed in 1978 by five engineers as a spin off from the Swindon based Plessey Semiconductor. The initial concept was to operate purely as an ASIC design house where most of the initial design work was on Plessey products. The company evolved and widened its scope over the following years to include the production test and supply of its ASICs and was one of the first “fabless” semiconductor companies in the UK.
Since those fledgling days, SWINDON has grown into a multi-disciplined organization with the ability to deliver hundreds of millions of ASICs per year which are designed, tested and supplied solely from the SWINDON facilities. We have established an international reputation as a market leader and specialist in the design and supply of complex high performance, high quality and low cost sensor interfaces culminating in global leadership in Tyre Pressure Measurement Systems (TPMS), of which we supply over 50% of the global demand. We are experts in all types of Automotive and Industrial sensor interfaces and low pressure sensing ASIC and MEMS solutions.
