The Customer Requirement

Cameras have become an integral part of mobile phones and Cambridge Mechatronics Ltd (CML) has valuable IP with regards to the algorithms for controlling the SMA actuator accurately, quickly and effectively.
Because of the volatile, ever changing nature of the mobile phone market the project had to be completed quickly and be right first time.
SWINDON’s customer required a partner who could implement the digital controller with the required analogue driver and sense circuitry at much reduced cost and physical size that would fit neatly into compact camera modules.

The SWINDON ASIC Solution

A key problem to solve was to prevent digital noise from the fast, integrated microprocessor compromising the accurate measurement of actuator resistance, which determines the lens position. All this had to be achieved using a single noisy mobile phone supply of between 2.3v and 5.5v.

The Results

The design was realised using 0.18?m CMOS technology, and has been demonstrated within the application with 100% functionality only 17 months from the start of the project and the chip will go into volume production early in 2012.
The XC104 is the world’s leading SMA mobile phone camera actuator and provides unprecedented and unique Auto Focus (AF) and Optical Image Stabilisation (OIS) performance to the mobile phone manufactures.
In ASIC development today there are many options available but if the aim is to create deliverable technology which really gives the user an improved function and the manufacture a sustainable competitive advantage they co-operation and mutual understanding is the key.
In working together CML and SWINON have shown what can be achieved and in double quick time too.
